Storage Tips
Do:
- Keep items off the floor using pallets, 2x4s, or plywood to prevent moisture damage.
- Plan your unit layout carefully to maximize space and efficiency. Leave a center aisle for easy access to the back of the unit.
- Use freestanding shelves to organize boxes and smaller items.
- Label boxes on all sides and maintain a reference list for quick retrieval. Pack boxes so they are manageable in weight, placing heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones on top.
- Store frequently used items near the front for easy access.
- Protect belongings with moving pads, sheets, or light blankets.
- Check your storage unit at least once a month.
- Disassemble large furniture such as tables and bed frames. Label pieces and hardware for easy reassembly.
- For electronics with multiple cords, use colored stickers to match cords to their connections. Whenever possible, store items in their original boxes.
- Clean and dry all appliances before storage; leave doors slightly ajar to prevent mildew.
- Store couches on end, stack chairs seat-to-seat, and place paper pads between furniture to prevent scratches. Use appliance interiors and drawers for smaller items.
- Place mattresses and box springs on their long edges, wrap for protection, and elevate them off the floor using 2–3 pieces of 2x4s cut to one foot.
- Store mirrors and paintings upright and books flat to protect spines.
- Apply a light coat of machine oil to metal tools, bicycles, and equipment to prevent rust. Clean and drain all equipment before storage.
- Wrap breakables and collectibles with bubble wrap or unprinted paper, securing with tape, and group similar items together.
- Store clothing and draperies in wardrobe boxes to maintain their shape.
- Purchase storage insurance to protect your valuable items.
- Use sturdy, stackable containers like Rubbermaid bins and keep valuable items toward the back of the unit.
- Keep out-of-season clothing easily accessible for convenience.
- Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the on-site manager.
